Shatkora takes its name from a rare citrus fruit with a citrusy bitterness found in no other curry on our menu. Our chef lets it infuse slowly over a low flame in a sauce of toasted spices until its aroma marries perfectly with chicken that’s been simmering for hours. The result: a medium-spiced dish that’s tangy, woody and deeply comforting, with a clinging sauce that coats basmati rice beautifully. A taste of home for Barcelona’s Bangladeshi community.
A dish with a story
Shatkora (Citrus macroptera) has grown wild for centuries and is picked before ripening for its characteristic bitterness.
This curry is a traditional dish served on big family occasions and especially treasured by the Bangladeshi community in the UK, who brought it to the rest of Europe.
Today a must-have at the best Indo-Bangladeshi restaurants in Europe, Shatkora remains a reliable favourite on our chef’s specials menu in Barcelona.
Our chef has his sources, but no historian has yet written the official biography of shatkora. We tell the legend as it was passed down to us in the kitchen — enjoy it with as much appetite as scepticism.
